How to Choose the Right Chamber for Your Inhaler

How to Choose the Right Chamber for Your Inhaler

How to Choose the Right Chamber for Your Inhaler

Choosing the right AEROCHAMBER® Valved Holding Chamber (VHC), often called a spacer, can help make inhaler therapy easier and more effective. The right choice depends on how the inhaler will be used, who is using it, and what level of technique support is needed.  A chamber helps hold medication after it is released from the inhaler, giving you more time to breathe it in.

AEROCHAMBER® VHC devices manufactured by Monaghan Medical are prescription-only medical devices. This guide can help you understand your options and prepare for a conversation with your healthcare provider.

Understanding the Role of a Valved Holding Chamber

To use an inhaler correctly and get the intended dose of medication into the lungs, you must perfectly  coordinate inhalation with the  press of the inhaler. But even with perfect coordination, much of the medication deposits in the back of throat or mouth rather than in the lungs where it’s needed to help your breathing. Valved holding chambers (VHCs or sometimes called spacers) are designed to make inhaler use easier and medication delivery to the lungs more reliable. It holds the medication in the chamber until you are ready to breathe in, thus coordinating medication delivery with inhalation.

Mask or Mouthpiece? Choosing the Right Interface

AEROCHAMBER PLUS® Chambers/Spacers are available with either a mouthpiece or a mask, and choosing the right model is important to help ensure medication is delivered effectively to the lungs. Mouthpiece chambers are best suited for users who can form a tight seal with their lips, take a slow, deep breath in, and hold that breath for a few seconds after inhalation. They also offer a slimmer, more compact profile, which can make it easier to carry and store for everyday use.

Mask chambers are designed for users who may have difficulty creating a reliable seal with a mouthpiece or following coordinated inhalation instructions like young children, or individuals who are short of breath or in distress. A mask fits over the nose and mouth to create a secure seal and allows for a simpler technique known as ‘tidal breathing’, where the user can take 5 – 6 normal breaths instead of one slow, deep inhalation with a breath hold. This approach can make inhaler therapy easier and more effective when coordination or breath control is a challenge.
