In this episode of Big Ideas Theater, Garry Kauffman MPA, RRT, FAARC, shares his perspective on the importance and value of practicing patient centric care. To Kauffman, this means providing care that is respectful of and responsive to the patient’s preferences, needs and values.
“We should always be focused on the patient,” Kauffman said. He continues to add that the patient should be a partner in the care delivery system.
Kauffman highlights eight principles for patient centered care developed by the Picker Institute. These principles include ensuring patient access to care, integrating care among different providers, and more.
He reminds RTs to be sensitive to transitioning the patient—not simply discharging. The patients should be transitioned from the hospital to the post-acute provider. He also explains that RTS should aim for simplicity when educating patients about their care.
“[Patient centric care] really gets us to refocus on simple things that we’ve known all along, but we haven’t really put in the model for the patients,” Kauffman said. “It is knowing that the patient comes first.”
