Big Ideas Theater: End of Life Discussions from the RT Perspective

In this episode of Big Ideas Theater, Stephanie Williams, BS, RRT, shares her perspective on the importance of planning for final decisions and having end of life discussions. Williams explains the difference between palliative care and hospice care, and how these decisions are made on which care to use.

Williams reminds viewers that we plan for every stage of our lives, and end of life needs to be included. She adds that we all need to be educated on the purpose of hospice care—to increase the quality of life for the patient. She continues to highlight additional services hospice care provides to families.

According to Williams, RTs can help their patients by talking with them and sharing that: “We want to empower you to make the very best choices for you. We want you to be comfortable. We want you to remain in control for as long as you possible can. Let us help you make that decision.”

“And it starts by having a conversation about their goals and wishes,” Williams said.

Big Ideas Theater 2017 was filmed at the AARC Congress 2017 in Indianapolis, IN. Congress speakers and lecturers shared their expertise and insights during these brief interviews.
