According to Dr. Rotta, too many clinicians in ICUs all over the country are still taking the wrong approach to the care of children with severe acute asthma, and he reminded everyone that the goals of mechanical ventilation for these kids are quite different from those of the patient with ARDS or respiratory failure.
“In critical asthma we really are not trying to influence the course of the disease,” he said. “We’re just trying to support the child with the minimal support and not get in the way.” Finding the right strategy is the key to success with these patients, and Dr. Rotta outlined the path to reaching it.
